Professor of French and exponent of academic excellence during the first twenty-two years of Southern Methodist University; then a distinguished professor at Vanderbilt University; his triple-based education at Tulane, at Oxford (where he was a Rhodes Scholar) and at the University of Grenoble gave him an international vision which he successfully imparted to many students in this region, while firmly fusing his scrupulous scholarship with his steady exploration of Christian theology.
